Brookgreen Gardens is a national historic landmark in the heart of South Carolina’s lowcountry that exceptionally blends four mission areas in botanical gardens, art, history, and the environment.

We have an immediate opening for the Manger of Volunteer Engagement position. This dynamic position is responsible for the development, organization, and administration of the volunteer program to ensure that they constitute a significant resource in the achievement of the institution’s goals and works to ensure that volunteers have positive and rewarding experiences. Working with our management team, this position ensures the volunteers; managers and the institution are gaining from the volunteer’s participation.

Due to our spectacular environment and public events, the ideal candidate must have open availability to work within our operating hours; which includes days, weekends, some evenings, and holidays. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, a positive attitude, and a great work ethic.

Examples of duties:

  • Actively recruits volunteers of all ages through networking with schools, civic groups, and other institutions. This includes, but not limited to, newsletters sent regarding our volunteer opportunities, public speaking to these groups, and developing programs that would suit Brookgreen Gardens and the different volunteers.
  • Facilitates volunteer involvement in the various programs of Brookgreen Gardens by identifying with program managers opportunities for volunteers, by recruiting and assigning volunteers to those purposes, and by monitoring the success of these arrangements for both the program managers and the volunteers.
  • Schedules volunteers for all Special Events and designated volunteer opportunities throughout Brookgreen Gardens not covered by other department managers.
  • Fosters the morale, sense of achievement, and commitment to Brookgreen Gardens by the volunteers by conducting orientation and training, providing recognition and rewards, sustaining communications between volunteers and the larger organization, and giving continuous evidence of how Brookgreen values these individuals and their contributions.
  • Ensures that records are kept to document volunteer contributions. Helps evaluate the volunteers with the help of the program managers. Counsels both program managers and volunteers in an effort to accomplish the mutual goals of good productive work for the manager, the volunteer and Brookgreen Gardens.
  • Represents Brookgreen Gardens at professional meetings and public gatherings and any publicity needed.
  • Performs the duties of Manager on Duty (MOD) in rotation with other managers.

Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of the program areas of Brookgreen Gardens; knowledge of computer and software applications; ability to work comfortably and effectively with volunteers, fellow employees, and people in the community. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in work products and relationships with co-workers and to high moral and ethical principles. Completion of an undergraduate degree and two years of experience working with a volunteer organization. Ability to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.

Pre-employment screening including drug screen and background checks are required upon hire. A valid SC Driver's License is required.
